How the gross-up works

Tax brackets and contribution caps make the gross-to-net function piecewise — there is no closed-form inverse. The engine therefore solves it numerically: it brackets the answer, then bisects until the forward calculation lands on your target to the cent. The gross it returns is re-verified by running it back through the same 2026 parameters, so the take-home shown is exactly what the gross-to-net direction would produce.

Every deduction line of the forward direction applies here: federal income tax after the basic personal amount, provincial tax for the selected province (Ontario, Quebec or British Columbia), CPP and CPP2 contributions, EI premiums — plus QPP and QPIP when Quebec is selected.

Default assumptions

A worked example

For a target take-home of $52,000 a year in Ontario, the solver returns a required gross of $66,838.37 a year — $14,838.37 of employee deductions stand between the two, split across CPP/CPP2, EI and federal plus provincial tax. These amounts are produced by the same engine as the form above, when this page is generated.

What this calculator does not compute

The gross-up covers the same scope — and the same documented limits — as the gross-to-net salary calculator: no provincial surtaxes, refundable credits or employer-specific deductions. Details on the methodology page.

When this page is useful

The typical use case is salary negotiation: you know the monthly or yearly take-home you need — rent, savings target, current pay to match — and the employer talks in gross. This page hands you the gross figure to ask for, with the same verified 2026 rates as the rest of the site. For the forward direction and the most-searched amounts, see the salary calculator and the computed salary pages. The form state is shareable by URL: copy the link and the recipient sees your exact scenario.
