How is your take-home pay computed?
Net pay before other deductions is obtained by subtracting employee contributions and income tax from gross: federal income tax after the basic personal amount, provincial or territorial tax for the selected province, Canada Pension Plan contributions and Employment Insurance premiums.
Pre-tax deductions that vary by employer — RRSP matching, group insurance premiums — are out of scope and documented on the methodology page.
Most-searched amounts:
Default assumptions
- Private-sector employee paid an annual gross salary — switch the form to a monthly view if needed.
- Province defaults to Ontario; Quebec (QPP, QPIP, federal abatement) and British Columbia are selectable — only parameterized provinces are listed.
- Selecting Quebec swaps in its own payroll lines — QPP instead of CPP, QPIP premiums and the federal abatement — automatically.
- No pre-tax payroll deductions (RRSP matching, group insurance) — they vary by employer.
A worked example
On a $80,000 annual gross in Ontario, the engine itemizes $19,285.56 of employee deductions (24.11% effective) — CPP and CPP2, EI, federal and provincial tax — leaving a take-home of $5,059.54 per month. These amounts are produced by the same code as the form above, when this page is generated — and every salary amount page is recomputed the same way at build time, audited to the cent before deploy.
Need the monthly figure, the annual equivalent, or a different province? The form converts monthly ↔ annual and exposes every parameterized option — nothing is approximated outside the verified set.
What this calculator does not compute
Provincial surtaxes (Ontario surtax, Ontario Health Premium), refundable credits and employer-specific deductions are out of scope — the full list is documented on the methodology page. For the reverse conversion — starting from a target take-home to find the gross to negotiate — use the paycheck calculator.
Why your actual paycheck may differ
Real payslips carry lines we deliberately leave out: RRSP contributions, group insurance premiums, union dues, taxable benefits — all employer- or plan-specific. Provincial surtaxes and refundable credits are documented gaps too. At identical parameters, the engine is cross-checked against official payroll references before publication. One practical detail: the form state is shareable by URL — copy the link with your parameters and the recipient lands on the same calculation.
